HC upholds death penalty for two in Opu murder trail

The High Court (HC) on Monday upheld death penalty for two, who were earlier sentenced to death, in a case filed for killing Ashikur Rahman Khan Opu in 2008 in capital's Sutrapur area.

Justice Md Ruhul Quddus and Justice Bhishmadev Chakrabortty passed the order after holding hearing on appeal in the case, reports BSS.

The High Court also acquitted two people, who were convicted and sentenced to imprisonment for life by the lower court in 2012, from the charges.

It, however, abstained from passing any judgement about another two convicts, who are yet to be arrested.

The High Court upheld death for Monjurul Abedin Russel and Nowshad Hossain Mollah Robin. It acquitted Mohammad Ali Munna and Iftekhar Beigh Jhalak from the charges.

According to the case documents, miscreants shot at Ashikur Rahman Khan Opu, his brothers Arifur Rahman Khan Setu and Atikur Rahman Khan Bappy on May 23, 2008. Opu died of his injuries and his two brothers became crippled for life.
