The High Court (HC) on Sunday has cleared the way for Ganajagaran Mancha spokesperson Imran H Sarker to run for the Kurigram-4 seat in the general election, according to his lawyer.
The Kurigram returning officer had rejected Sarker’s application to contest the election. The Election Commission (EC) had also scrapped the review Sarker had filed on the decision.
But the HC bench of Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Razik-Al-Jalil stayed the EC’s decision on Sunday based on a petition from Sarker.
Barrister Tania Amir represented Sarker at the hearing, while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam represented the state, reports bdnews24.com.
“Imran H Sarker will be able to contest the polls,” Tania Amir told reporters after the hearing.
“As it may take time to send a certified copy to the EC, the court instructed the attorney general to inform the Election Commission to accept Imran’s candidacy as valid and allow him to compete in the polls.”
“We have full confidence that the attorney general will inform the EC informally,” she said in response to a question.
