Habiganj gas field starts test production

Habiganj gas field has started gas production on experimental basis from its Well No-1 from Sunday night.

According to a statement issued by the Bangladesh Gas Fields Company Ltd (BGFCL), the well was a work-over one which is now producing 16 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd).

Officials at state-owned Petropbangla said its subsidiary Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Ltd (BAPEX) has successfully completed its work-over jobs at the field recently.

"But, now we're running the production on experimental basis. We're hopeful of raising the production soon," said a top official at Petrobangla.

According to UNB, BAPEX officials informed that they had to drill for up to 3000 meters of depth from the surface to find the gas structure from where the field is now producing gas.

They said the Habiganj field, one of the oldest gas fields in the country, was discovered in 1963 with two gas sands. Since then, the field produced 275bcf (billion cubic feet) gas from its upper sand.

But the well was shut down in December, 2012 due to release of excessive water from it and later BAPEX was appointed for drilling its lower sand structure.

BAPEX become successful to produce gas by using its own work over rig Bijoy-11.
