Govt working on strong road network to boost economy, reduce poverty: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said the government is building a strong road network across the country to advance the country economically and reduce poverty fast.

Sheikh Hasina said this while inaugurating two bridges on the Teesta River in Rangpur and Brahmanbaria districts through video conferencing from her official residence Ganobhaban in Dhaka on Sunday.

The bridges are-- the 850-metre long Gangachara Sheikh Hasina Bridge at Gangachara upazila Rangpur and 771-metre long Sheikh Hasina Titas Bridge at Bancharampur in Brahmanbaria, reports UNB.

The Prime Minister said the economic condition of the mass people will get better with the improved road networks as they will have better job opportunities.

She said the four-lane Dhaka-Chittagong highway will be turned into a six-lane one in the future while the Dhaka-Sylhet highway is being upgraded into a four-lane one. "We've taken steps in this regard."

LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain and LGRD Senior Secretary Dr Zafar Ahmed Khan also spoke on the occasion.
