The government vowed to hold talks with the primary school teachers over pay scale this week.
Teachers from across the country began a hunger strike at Dhaka Central Shaheed Minar on Saturday over wage disparity between assistant teachers and head teachers with the same qualifications.
Assistant teachers receive 14th wage grade and head teachers get paid according to 11th wage grade.
It was called off Sunday evening after Minister Mostafizur Rahman assured them of addressing the issue.
“The talks will begin this week…Their demands will be met if they are found to be logical,” said the minister on Tuesday.
Though a few hundred had started the protests, the number decreased to about 30 by Monday.
Bdnews24 says at least 60 protesters were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital after falling ill over the three days of protest.
The primary education minister met representatives from the protestors at his residence in Minto Road on Monday afternoon before going to the Shaheed Minar.
The strike was called off on his assurances.
Rahman, however, on Tuesday said he did not promise anything to the protesting teachers.
“I did not promise to elevate wage grade. In fact, I cannot do that as it also concerns the ministries of finance and public administration.”
He said that the chief of Director of Primary Education has been instructed to initiate the talks. “The teachers have also been told to nominate their representatives.”
