Government has brought 3.5 million people under the scheme of old-age allowance across the country as part of its safety net campaign during the current financial year.
Social Welfare Minister Rashed Khan Menon came up with the revelation on Monday in the parliament.
He said, “The government is currently providing elderly allowance to 3.50 million male and female population.”
Replying to a question in the House, the minister said this government has brought 5.66 million disadvantaged people belonging to the elderly, destitute, insolvent disabled and disabled student categories under allowances during the period.
Also, he said the present government is providing 1.26 million widows, 0.82 million insolvent disabled and 80,000 students with allowances.
BSS quoted him as saying that the government has been increasing the size of allowances every year.
