Former Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, also president of the city Awami League, passed away at a hospital in the port city in the early hours of Friday. He was 73.
Mohiuddin breathed his last around 3:00am at Max Hospital, said his eldest son Mohiul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, also an organising secretary of the ruling Awami League.
He had been put on life support since 10 in the night on Thursday hours after he was admitted there in the evening, his son-in-law Dr Selim Jahangir, also head of the CCC Health Department.
On November 11, Mohiuddin was admitted to the hospital with severe kidney and heart ailments. Later he had to be shifted to Square Hospitals in Dhaka and flown to a hospital in Singapore.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed her shock at the death of Mohiuddin, mayor of the country’s second largest city.
His Namaz-e-Janaza will be held after Asr prayers at Laldighi Maidan in the city. He will be buried at his family graveyard at Chashma Hill in the town's Sholoshahar.
Born at Gohira village in Raojan upazila of Chittagong on December 1, 1944, Mohiuddin joined Chhatra League in his school days.
Mohiuddin was elected CCC mayor first in 1994, while for the second time in 2000, and for the third consecutive time in 2005.
