Foreign minister visits Rakhine on August 9

Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali is going to Myanmar on August 9 to see the preparations for accommodation facilities.

He will particularly observe the installation of pre-fabricated houses for repatriation of Rohingya refugees, reports bdnews24.com.

Ali told Indian State Minister for External Affairs VK Singh about his plan during a meeting on Friday in Singapore on the sidelines of the 25th ASEAN Regional Forum, the foreign ministry said.

Foreign Secretary Md Shahidul Haque earlier last month said they had proposed to visit the Rakhine State to see the situation before the beginning of the repatriation of Rohingyas from Bangladesh.

Both sides have signed deals for a safe, voluntary and dignified return of Rohingyas following an “ethnic cleansing” of the Muslim-majorty Rakhine State.

The two ministers discussed the latest situation on the repatriation pursuant to the agreement signed between Bangladesh and Myanmar.

State Minister Singh reasserted India's readiness to extend all possible cooperation and support to Bangladesh for implementation of the terms of the agreement, the foreign ministry said.

He also communicated India’s interest in the Solar Alliance and renewable energy cooperation with Bangladesh.

He reaffirmed India's commitment to accelerate the BIMSTEC process and sought Bangladesh’s support.

Singh also offered assistance to Bangladesh regarding establishment of a ‘holocaust museum’ in memory of the martyrs of the Liberation War of Bangladesh.
