Food ministry starts drives against illegal hoarding

The ministry of food, on Tuesday, started drives against the illegal stockpiling of paddy and rice following the rocketing trend of the staple market.

The eight teams led by the ministry began the drives at Babu Bazar wholesale market in Dhaka at 3:45 pm on the day, said a release.

The team members are appointed to search whether anyone is involved in an artificial crisis by illegal stockpiling.

Then, the team will take legal actions against the traders who would be found guilty of hoarding.

The decision on the drives was taken at a meeting on the same day chaired by Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder at his office in the ministry.

The meeting decided to send semi-official letters to the deputy commissioners and upazila nirbahi officers to prevent illegal stockpiling and also to the NSI, RAB and the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection.

The minister also directed the officials to hold a joint meeting between the ministry of agriculture, food and commerce soon.

A control room has also been opened in the food ministry regarding the issue.

All have been requested to call +88022233802113, 01790499942 and 01713003506 to report any information on illegal stock.
