Raihan M Chowdhury, senior news consultant at The Financial Express (FE), has passed away at a Dhaka city hospital. He was around 57 years old.
He breathed his last at Islami Bank Central Hospital around 2 pm on Saturday, his family says. He had been suffering from liver cirrhosis.
He left behind his wife and two sons and a lot of admirers to mourn his death.
His first namaz-e-janaza will be held on the premises of the Dhaka Reporters’ Unity at 4:00pm and the second on the premises of the National Press Club at 5:00pm.
After Isha prayers, his third namaz-e-janaza will be held at Sheltech Rahman Villa in the capital's Shantinagar area.
He will be buried at the Shahjahanpur Graveyard.
Mr Chowdhury had been in journalism for more than three decades.
He had been working for The FE since 1996. He also worked as the FE's senior business editor.
Mr Chowdhury won the Dhaka Reporters Unity Best Reporting Award in 2006 and the Tokyo-based Developing Asia Journalism Awards for three years, 2009, 2010 and 2012.
He was also shortlisted for the final round of the Singapore-based Asian Environmental Journalism Awards 2013.
Mr Chowdhury had membership of the National Press Club, the Economic Reporters' Forum and the Dhaka Reporters' Unity. He was also a former advisor to Capital Market Journalists' Forum.
President of Capital Market Journalists' Forum Ziaur Rahman and General Secretary Abu Ali have expressed deep shock at Mr Chowdhury’s death.
During his long career, Mr Chowdhury visited many countries, including the USA, UK, Germany, Sweden, Austria, Spain, and Japan.
Prior to joining The FE, he worked for The Morning Sun and The New Nation as sub-editor as well as reporter.
In 1990, he graduated with honours and a master's degree in public administration from Dhaka University.
He was born on January 1, 1966, and was around 57 years old when he died.
