Massive erosion by the mighty Padma threatens dwellings and establishments in different areas of Naria upazila of Shariatpur.

On a single day on Saturday the mighty river devoured several multi-storey buildings, a jam-e mosque and others establishments located on the riverbank in the upazila.

Many houses, schools, mosques and other establishments were washed away by recent aggressive erosion, reports UNB.

More areas and establishments, including several government establishments are also at risk. Naria Upazila Health Complex might be washed away anytime.

Around 1.50 km area from Naria Banshtola to Purba Naria washed away by the river in the last couple of days, but the authorities concerned paid no head on it, locals said.

Although the erosion was continuing for the last couple of years, no initiative to build a dam or embankment was taken by the local administration, claimed the locals.

Md Shafiqul Islam, executiveengineer of Water Development Board (WDB), said that higher authorities have already been informed about the latest situation.

"The construction works for building a dam will be started soon," he further said.

While visiting the affected areas on Sunday, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sanjida Yeasmin assured the locals that the construction works of the 9-kimdam to be started on the 1st week of October.
