The Election Commission will unveil on Nov 8 the roadmap for the general election.
The decision was made at a meeting chaired by Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda on Sunday, Election Commissioner Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury told the media, bdnews24.com reports.
CEC Huda will announce the schedule in detail in an address to the nation in the evening on that day, according to Shahadat.
Generally, the CEC’s address to the nation is aired live through state media BTV and Bangladesh Betar after 7pm. The schedule of the last parliamentary election was announced at 7:30pm.
The EC decision comes after the Jatiya Oikya Front alliance requested it to defer the announcement following talks with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina last Thursday.
The crucial pre-election dialogues between the ruling Awami League-led coalition and other parties are ending on Nov 7. Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said they would not sit anymore for talks after that day.
“We were supposed to announce the schedule on Nov 4. Now it will be announced on Nov 8 after taking everything into consideration,” Shahadat said.
The commission finalised the electoral codes of conduct related to electronic voting machines or EVMs in the meetings on Saturday and Sunday, four days after the government issued an ordinance paving the way for the use of the machines in general elections.
The EC Secretariat will gazette the decisions related to the codes after vetting by the law ministry, according to the election commissioner.
“There will be limited use of EVMs (in the 11th parliamentary elections), but we are yet to decide in how many constituencies they will be put to use,” he said.
