An eviction drive is being carried out at the Hawkers Owners Association Market in Bangabandhu Avenue in the capital.
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) launched the drive in the makeshift two-storey market around 12:20 pm on Sunday.
Among the 540 shops in the market, only 270 of them were declared legal.
The DSCC plans to build a 10-storey market there.
Russel Sabrin, chief property officer of the DSCC, told the reporters that the city corporation has already issued a notice in this regard.
They (hawkers) were given time till Eid-ul-Fitr, he said, adding that the DSCC started the eviction drives after the deadline ended.
