A Chandpur court on Tuesday convicted a young man of killing his grandmother in 2014 and sentenced him to death.
The convict is Mokhlesur Rahman, 26, son of Abdur Rashid of Chhengarchar MM Kandi village in Matlab Uttar upazila. He was tried in absentia.
According to the prosecution, Mokhlesur tried to take away a necklace from the neck of his grandmother Karful Begum, 75, on April 4, 2014 night while she was asleep. However, the elderly woman woke up during the act.
Later, the youth strangled her and dumped the body in front of the house of one of his neighbours. He also went into hiding after the incident.
Victim's son Afazuddin filed a case against Mokhlesur the following day. Police submitted a charge-sheet against him on July 20, 2014. Police arrested him after the submission of the charge-sheet when he confessed to his crime.
However, he was released from jail on bail later and he jumped the bail. After examining the records and witnesses, District and Session's Judge Saleh Uddin Ahmed handed down the verdict, reports UNB.
