The youth, who died in a gunfight with police in Wari area of Dhaka on Friday, was a suspect in murder of Daffodil University student Khandaker Abu Talha.
‘Rakib’, 22, died in a shootout near Joy Kali Temple at Wari, said Wari police’s Sub-Inspector Abdul Khaleque, reports bdnews24.com.
“A gang of robbers opened fire sensing presence of police. One of them was left injured as police opened fire in retaliation,” the police official said.
Rakib was declared dead around 4am after being taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. He was wearing a jeans pant and a t-shirt.
SI Khaleque said two of Rakib’s accomplices, Md Zakir, 20 and Md Dhola, 18, were detained.
Wari OC Rafiqul Islam identified the dead as Md Rakib, a resident of Bongram neighbourhood in Wari.
Rakib is the prime suspect in Talha murder case which dates back to 2017, according o the OC.
He is accused in another case over a murder carried out near Joy Kali Temple on Apr 1. Rakib is also accused in multiple mugging cases, said OC Islam.
On Oct 8, Talha, a student of computer science, was mugged while heading to university from his Wari home. The muggers stabbed him with a knife.
He was declared dead after being rushed to hospital.
Nine days later, police arrested Sabuj and Abdur Rahman Milon over the incident. Police got to know about Rakib’s role in the murder from their confessional statements, the OC said.
