A suspected robber died in an alleged gunfight between two groups of them near a Rohingya refugee camp at Teknaf upazila in Cox’s Bazar on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as 32-year-old Hossain Ali, who was locally known as ‘Bailla Dakat’. He was the son of Mohammad Salam, who resides in the Nayapara camp.
The incident was reported from Nayapara around 4 am Thursday, according to Teknaf Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ranjit Kumar Barua.
He said they arrested two people who are siblings — 35-year-old Abdur Razzaque and 31-year-old Abdus Salam — in raids on the camp about this incident.
The three, including deceased Ali, also a Rohingya, are named in multiple cases filed with Teknaf police, he added.
Police recovered Ali’s body and sent it to Cox’s Bazar General Hospital for autopsy, according to bdnews24.
Another robber, Nurul Alam, was injured in the gunfight but managed to flee sensing police presence. He is a suspect in a case related to the robbery of firearms from an Ansar barrack in the camp.
Ali and his accomplices abducted Razzaque a week ago, OC Barua said.
Later, according to him, Razzaque managed to flee, ganged up with his followers and attacked Ali out of vengeance, triggering the gunfight.
