A court in Dhaka on Thursday sentenced a security guard to six months jail in a case filed under the Cruelty to Animals Act for burying two dogs and 14 puppies alive at Bagichartek in Rampura in 2017.

The convict, Md Siddik Siddik, did not appear the court due to his illness.

The court also fined him Tk 200, in default, to serve seven days more in jail.

According to the prosecution, Siddik beat up the dogs and puppies and put them in a sack after tying up their legs. He buried them alive on the night of October 25, reports UNB.

On November 1, Rakibul Haq Amil, founder and chairman of People for Animal Welfare (PAW) Foundation, filed a case against Siddique with Rampura Police Station under section 7 of the Cruelty to Animals Act, 1920.

After examining the records and six witnesses among 15, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ahsan Habib handed down the verdict.
