Man dies in Mymensingh ‘shootout’

One person has died in a ‘shootout’ with police during an anti-drug drive in Mymensingh on Wednesday.

The gunfight took place near Shambhuganj Bridge at around 1:00 am, said OC Shah Kamal of the detective branch of district police.

The man has been identified as 27-year-old Sumon Mia, a resident of Charkalibari, who was named in 10 cases including theft and robbery. He was also involved in drug trafficking, claimed the detective police.

A team of detective police raided Shambhganj Bridge to seize drugs.

“The armed criminals opened fired on the police and they retaliated in self-defence. Sumon was found shot after the drug dealers fled.”

Police took Sumon to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, bdnews24 reported.

Police recovered 4kg of cannabis from the scene. Two police members have been injured in the incident.
