A mobile court has jailed eight fishermen for catching Hilsa from the Jamuna River defying a government ban at Alekdia Char area in Shibaloy upazila of Manikganj district.
Shibaloy upazila assistant commissioner (Land) Md Jakir Hossain on Friday night sentenced the fishermen to one year jail each during a drive in the Jamuna River.
The fishermen are –Ayub Sheikh, Fazlul Haque, Noor-e-Alam, Hamid Ali, Mirazul Sheikh, Alamgir Hossain, Lokman Sheikh, and Habu Mia, reports UNB.
Around 2,000 meters of current net was burnt during the drive.
The government imposed a 22-day ban on catching, selling, storing and transporting Hilsa from October 9 to 31 to ensure safe spawning of the fish.
