Cox’s Bazar ‘shootout’ leaves drug pedlar dead

A listed drug pedlar was killed in a reported shootout with police at Cox’s Bazar in the early hours of Saturday.

The dead man was identified as Habib Ullah Habib, 35, son of Mohammad Hossain and also listed in the Home Ministry's drug traders' list.

Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Police Station, said police earlier arrested Habib. Following his information, law enforcers conducted a drive to catch rest of the criminals at Shaplapur Puranpara area in Teknaf upazila along with Habib at around 5:30 am.

When the team reached there, his associates opened fire on the police, prompting them to fire back, triggering the shootout.

At one point, Habib came in the line of fire and received bullet injuries during the skirmish.

He was then taken to Teknaf Sadar Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, UNB reported.

Sub-inspector Raju, constables Zia and Badsha of the police station were also injured, said the OC adding that police recovered 6,000 yaba tablets, two pistols and 14 cartridges from the spot.
