Farmers in Gopalganj are passing a very busy time as onion cultivation is going on in full swing.
The Department of Agriculture Extension said around 2825 hectares of land have been brought under the spicy crop farming with a production target of 29,612 metric tonnes (MT) in the current season.
The cultivation will continue till the end of January across Muksudpur upazila of the district, according to sources.
“I have cultivated onions on two bighas of land (104 decimal) spending above Tk 70,000 as the price of seeds and plants is high in the market compared to last year,” said Kalidar Mondal (55), a farmer of village Kamlapur.
But the increase in price in the local markets has made the farmers optimistic of making a good profit this season, he added.
Different NGOs, Government and Private Commercial Banks, including Krishi Bank, have provided loans among the poor and marginal farmers of the region.
Latif Sheikh (48), a farmer of South Khal-ballabdi village, said he has cultivated the crop origin 'Tahirpuri' on three bighas (156 decimal) of land spending Tk 75,000.
“I’m expecting 165 maunds of onion from my field and sell those for Tk 1, 75,000, in the local market,” Latif added.
Samir Kumar Gwashami, Deputy Director (DD) of DAE Gopalganj told the FE that they have distributed adequate seeds, other agricultural inputs and provided necessary technical assistance to the farmers for achieving their target.
