JOYPURHAT, Oct 4: Low market prices have disheartened potato growers in Kalai upazila of the district.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) official sources said the prices have been decreased at Tk 200 to Tk 250 per sack (80 kg) across the upazila. Most of the growers do not want to sell the item right now; rather they prefer to preserve it in the cold storages till the market rate gets improved.
Farmers of the upazila had achieved over 0.1 million tonne of potato from 12,550 hectares of land this season, said sub-assistance agriculture officer of Kalai upazila. Some 70,000 tonnes of potato have already been preserved in the cold storage till the date, he added.
A sack of Granula potato were sold at Tk 1250 to Tk 1300, diamond at Tk 1080 to Tk 1100, Pakri at Tk 1400 to Tk 1450 and Ruman potato variety at Tk 1400 to Tk 1440 last month in the retail market.
Now, Granula is being sold at Tk 800 to Tk 840, Diamond at Tk 1100 to Tk 1150, Pakri at Tk 1200 to Tk 1250 and Ruman at Tk 1000 to Tk 1050.
Manager of a local cold storage Tarek Rahman said absence of traders is responsible for low market price of the essential commodity item across the upazila. The price may rise during the Boro harvesting period, he added.
