Through the authority concerned wanted to start the repair work on the crop protection embankments on December 15, it would be delayed further as water is yet to be receded from Sunamganj and other districts of the division.
It may take two more weeks, officials said.
Meanwhile, the first deadline ended on November 30, but the formation of Project Implementation Committees (PICs) couldn't be completed as yet. However, it would be completed before the start of their field works on schemes.
WDB's Superintending Engineer, Sylhet, SM Shahidul Islam told this correspondent, due to the recent and untimely rainwater level of rivers and haors have risen. Now it is difficult to start the work.
He added, "We expect to start the work after two weeks."
The official said although the formation of PIC is delayed, it would not hamper the repair work.
Meanwhile, a total of about 1088 PICs had been formed while another 300 are set to be formed for executing schemes to reconstruct or repair the crop protection embankments in 11 upazilas this year. Although the deadline ends December 15, it would be completed in 15 days.
Tk 590 million is sanctioned yet while Tk 460 million is on the pipeline for executing the schemes. Works are set to be done through new system of implementation on cash payment named 'Money for Work', the official said.
A PIC is would implement work worth Tk 0.52 million, he said.
Farmers and activists on the haor region however, apprehend the late start of works on haors would cause threat to the region's lone crop as it happened in the last year's Boro season due to early and heavy rains, floods and others.
As per new policy, a PIC is to be formed with seven genuine farmers of the concerned area. Upazila nirbahi officer is to form the committee with president, member-secretary and members, if needed with consultation with other officials.
Farmer Habibur Rahman of Derai upazila said the delay in forming the PIC's may cause late start of field works. He demanded for starting works just on recession of water from the haors.
