The poor and marginal farmers in Panchagarh are passing a busy time in farming various kinds of winter vegetables during the current Rabi season.
District Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) officials said the cultivators of five upazilas in the district have brought huge lands under vegetables cultivation this season.
Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) provided quality seed among the growers at a low rate, they added.
Owing to the lucrative market price and high demand, farming of cauliflower, cabbage, carrot, radish, chilli, potato, groundnut, bean and other leafy vegetables have been gaining popularity in the region, according to a BSS report.
DAE officials said the production cost of winter vegetables on one acre of land is approximately TK 30,000 to TK 40,000. But farmers can get profit TK 50,000 to TK 60,000 from same amount of land if weather condition remains favourable.
Local agricultural officials have been providing necessary suggestion to the growers on the latest technology to increase the overall production.
Besides, Rajshahi Krishi Unnayon Bank (RAKUB) and other commercial banks have also been providing short-term loan to the farmers to make cultivation programme successful.
