SYLHET, Jan 25: Farmers of greater Sylhet region have been passing busy time for cultivation of different Rabi crops, including vegetable of all types and others. So far, crops on 87,144 hectares had been cultivated in the four districts.
The target has already been exceeded this year due to suitable weather condition.
The total includes 1559 hectares of wheat, 7443 hectares of mustard, 7564 hectares of potato, 1358 hectares of sweet potato, 2891 hectares of coriander leaf, 3297 hectares of chilli, 646 hectares of onion, 331 hectares of garlic, 345 hectares of lentil and 715 hectares of water melon, 1351 hectares of mashkalai, 527 hectares of groundnut, 512 hectares of maize and 4752 hectares of French bean while the rest area are used for farming other crops like, mung bean, khesari, pea, sesame, ginger and turmeric.
However, highest 52,435 hectares of land have been brought under vegetables farming.
A programme was taken up to bring about 75,000 hectares of land under the winter crops farming in Sylhet division this year, an official at the divisional office of DAE informed. Some 12,000 selected marginal farmers had been provided with seeds and fertilisers of maize, mustard and some vegetable free of cost in incentive.
Additional director of DAE, Sylhet Division, Md Altabur Rahman said at the end of the season the region's Rabi farming area will be increased as a special programme to bring barren lands under farming of different crops entered third year this time. The initiative was launched two years ago initially in one selected union of each of the 38 upazilas of Sylhet division, the official added.
Two more unions had been added in each of the upazilas this year, the official further said.
