10 hurt in police-BCL clash at CU

At least ten people were injured in sporadic clashes between Bangladesh Chhatra League(BCL) activists and police on Chittagong University campus during a blockade enforced by a faction of BCL to press home their four-point demand including release of some of their leaders.

Earlier on the day, a faction of BCL took position at Zero Point on the campus around 7:00am and staged demonstrations after locking the university's main gate. service.

Later, they put up a barricade on the rail tracks and picked up a driver of the shuttle train that disrupted the service and created sufferings to the university-bound teachers and several thousand students.

Although the driver was released later, the train service remained suspended till filing of this report around 3:00pm.

Belal Uddin, officer-in-charge of Hathazari Police Station, said police asked the BCL men to open the lock of the main gate but they ignored it and some of them carried out an attack on police and hurled brick chips towards them, forcing police to take action.

Ten people, including police constable Farid, were injured during the clash, he said adding the situation is under control now.

Police also fired bullets and lobbed tear gas shells during the clashes. Several crude bombs were exploded during the melee.

The BCL men vandalised a number of vehicles including a police vehicle.

The shuttle train service of Chittagong University (CU) remained suspended since Sunday morning as a faction of BCL men put up barricade on the rail track and on the campus to press home their 4-point demand including release of six BCL activists and withdrawal of a case filed against them.

No teacher's bus left the CU and no vehicles including rickshaw and auto-rickshaw entered the campus.

Enamu lHaq Arafat, former vice-president of CU unit BCL, said they will continue their movement unit their demand is not met by the authorities concerned.

Some BCL activists were arrested and a case was filed against them following a series of clashes between two BCL factions and recovery of firearms from different dormitories in the last few days.
