A man found guilty of killing his wife for dowry fled from a Satkhira court after a judge announced a death sentence for him.

Judge Hosne Ara Akter of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal delivered the verdict on Thursday.

The convict, Kamrul Sana, had been on bail and appeared for the hearing on Thursday morning. But he ran away soon after the announcement, said state counsel Jahurul Haider.

Sana is a native of Mirgang village in Shyamnagar upazila of the south-western district.

Sana left his wife Salma Begum injured by beating in July 2009 and forcibly fed her poison to try to portray the death as suicide, as per the case dossier.

Salma’s brother Rashidul Islam started the case at Shyamnagar Police Station. Police filed the charges against Sana and three others after an investigation.

Kamrul’s brother Mahmud Dhali, sister Molida Khatun and brother-in-law Nazir Gazi have been acquitted in the case, reports bdnews24.com.
