Dhaka commuters passed another day of intolerable sufferings as they remained stuck on roads for hours due to heavy traffic gridlock in different parts of the capital on Wednesday

Traffic congestions in the city turned acute after the resumption of full-fledged classes in all educational institutions.

“It seems that there is no end to people’s sufferings.  Traffic jam not only kills the time but also ruins our energy,” said Afrin Sultana, a resident of the Bailey Road area.

It took three hours today to drop her two daughters to school and pick them up in the Farmgate area, she said.

Many think the increase in the number of rickshaws and other vehicles is the main cause behind the traffic congestion, reports UNB.

The office-goers and students of primary and secondary schools had to go through tremendous suffering due to lack of public transport and traffic jam.

During a reality check, the news agency correspondent found that vehicular movement on road stretching from Mohakhali to Banani, Dhanmondi, Bijoy Sarani came to a standstill with impact spreading to other parts of the city.

A senior traffic officer of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, preferring anonymity, said the election of an organisation of transport workers union is going on at Mohakhali Bus Terminal and a huge number of vehicles including buses were seen parked at the terminal and its premises, triggering the traffic jam.

Following the election, the traffic congestion turned into a chaotic situation, forcing many people to walk on foot to their respective destinations.
