Coal extraction resumes at Barapukuria after three months

Barapukuria Coal Mining Company in Parbatipur upazila of Dinajpur has started coal extraction after three months.

Fazlur Rahman, managing director of the company, said that five hundred tonnes of coal were extracted between 9:30pm on Friday night and 6am Saturday morning, reports bdnews24.com.

“We believe 1,000 tonnes will be extracted by this evening. We are still assessing the situation. Work will gradually pick up speed. If all goes well we should be able to resume commercial production in 15 days,” he said.

Production at the mine was halted on June 15 after the coal stock for the 1,210 phase ran out. Three 525MW coal-powered thermal power plants in Barapukuria were also closed on Jul 22 after their coal reserves ran out.

After production at the coalmine failed to resume, it was alleged that coal reserves had secretly been sold off. The Anti-Corruption Commission is investigating the charges.
