Canada urged to find alternative way to send back Nur Chowdhury

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq has requested the Canadian government to find an alternative way to send back Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's convicted killer Nur Chowdhury from there.

He made the request as Canadian High Commissioner Lilly Nicholls called on him at his secretariat office on Tuesday.

"We have discussed ways to send back Nur Chowdhury from Canada. The High Commissioner informed us that Canadian law does not permit sending such persons to those countries where the execution of the death sentence takes place. I requested her to look into the possibilities of finding an alternative way to send him back. Sheltering a convicted killer is violation of human rights," Anisul said while talking to newsmen after the meeting.

The law minister said the Canadian envoy told him that she will convey the matter to her government, reports BSS.

"The Canadian High Commissioner wanted to know whether we will allow election observers during the next general election. I told her clearly that it is the matter of Election Commission and they will take a decision in this regard. It is the duty of Election Commission to organize free and fair elections. The government will provide all necessary supports. Bangladesh government is determined about a transparent and neutral election," he added.

While talking about Data Protection Act, the law minister said a meeting was held with stakeholders about formulating the draft of this law, adding, "Two-three more meetings will be held. This act will be formulated for protecting data, not for regulating."

Anisul further said Bangladesh-Canada relations have completed 50 years and both the countries give high emphasis on this relationship. Bangladesh wants the relations to be more strengthened and deeper, he said.
