The government has set a target to produce 500,000 motorcycles by 2021 and 1.0 million by 2027 in the draft of 'Motorcycle Industry Development Policy-2018'.
The cabinet approved the draft policy during its meeting on Monday at the secretariat with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam briefed reporters after the meeting, reports UNB.
Shafiul Alam said the draft was approved with an aim to expand the locally made motorcycle industry and to reduce import dependency.
At present, there is an opportunity of employment of 500,000 people in motorcycle industry but it will be promoted to 1.5 million in 2027 in the new policy, he said.
Besides, the draft of Bngladesh Shishu Academy Bill-2018 got the final nod of the cabinet, he added.
The draft of Bangladesh Engineering Research Council Bill-2018 was placed before the cabinet for its approval in principal but the Cabinet formed a four-member committee, headed by Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives (LGRD) Minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain, to examine the draft bill further.
Three other members of the committee are-- Housing and Public Works Minister Engr Mosharraf Hossain, Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu and Science and Technology Minister Yafes Osman.
