The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) has suspended river transport services on all routes due to bad weather.
BIWTA Joint Director MD Saiful Islam on Wednesday said they have asked relevant agencies or authorities to halt water transport services as per the suggestion of Bangladesh Meteorological Department.
The movement of launches, ferries and fishing boats will resume when weather conditions improve, he said.
"The suspension will continue until further notice," he added.
According to bdnews24.com, the Met Office has advised river ports to hoist riverine warning signal No. 2.
The operation of water vessel services on Paturia-Daulatdia and Shimulia-Kathalbari routes have remained suspended since 2:30pm and 3pm respectively due to bad weather, said Islam.
All water vessel services from Sadarghat and Narayanganj launch terminals have also been halted from 3pm and Chandpur from 4pm.
BIWTA Joint Director Alamgir Kabir said: “We have asked all to halt all types of river vessels services from Sadarghat.”
During the current monsoon, the BIWTA halted water transport services across the country 20 times.
