Banani fire brought under control after four hours

Firefighters have tamed a fire that broke out on the third floor of a six-storey building in Dhaka’s Banani.

The fire, which started in the Chairman Bari area around 9:15am on Saturday, was brought under control almost four hours later, the fire service said.

Fifteen fire service units are working to put out the blaze, Rozina Akhtar, a Fire Service Control Room official, told bdnews24.com.

“Though the building is next to a city thoroughfare, there was difficulty extinguishing it because there were no sources of water nearby,” she said. “We eventually had to use three windows on the third floor to get the water inside.”

Offices of Ananda TV are on the second floor of the building. said Ziaur Rahman, the operator on-duty at the firefighting unit’s control room.

“The fire started on the third floor where they make different types of crests,” he said.

Nine fire service units were dispatched to the scene when the fire was reported. Additional units later joined the firefighting effort.

“There were no casualties in the fire,” said Noor-e-Azam, OC of Banani Police. “When the fire started, people working nearby left their buildings and nearby garment factories gave their workers the day off.”

The fire also interfered with traffic along the road, said Md Salauddin, a Dhaka Metropolitan Police traffic inspector.

“But the situation has improved now that the fire is under control,” he said.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
