The High Court has granted anticipatory bail for six weeks to BNP vice-chairman and also former FBCCI President Abdul Awal Mintoo in two cases filed by police with Sonagazi Police Station in Feni.
Mintoo has also been asked to surrender in the Sessions Judge’s Court in Feni after six weeks.
The High Court bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice Md Salim passed the order on Thursday after hearing two separate bail petitions filed by Mintoo.
Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal appeared in the court hearing on behalf of the petitioner, while Assistant Attorney General Mizanur Rahman represented the state.
Two cases were filed against 354 people, including BNP vice-chairman Abdul Awal Mintoo, in connection with a clash on August 30 this year between BNP activists and police in Sonagazi upazila of Feni.
Sourajit Barua and Main Uddin, two sub-inspectors of Sonagazi Model Police Station, filed the cases against 47 identified BNP leaders and its activists.
On August 29, at least ten people were injured in a clash between police and BNP activists when they were holding a rally at Sonagazi Zero Point in the upazila as part of their central program protesting the price hike of daily commodities, including oil, gas and fertilizer, as well as the murders of Swechchasebak Dal leader Abdur Rahim and local Chhatra Dal president Noor-e Alam in Bhola.
