There are a total of 15,919 convicted prisoners in different jails across the country.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan came up with the information while replying to a starred question from treasury bench member AKM Jahangir in the Jatiya Sangsad on Sunday.
"Out of the total convicted prisoners there are 15,374 male and 545 female as of February 1, 2018," he said.
The minister said the government constructed/ repaired and opened 13 jails across the country since 2009, adding, "Eight more jails are under construction. Initiatives have been taken to construct more six jails during the current financial year."
He informed the House that the government has also a plan to construct four more prisons in Jessore, Rangpur, Rajshahi and Pabna country during the next fiscal year, reports BSS.
Replying to another starred question from treasury bench member MA Malek, Asaduzzaman Khan said, "Currently Bangladesh has two extradition treaties for exchanging criminals. India and United Arab Emirates are under the treaty."
