At least 11 people have died after a train crashed into a tourist microbus at a level crossing in Chattogram's Mirsharai Upazila.
The accident took place near the entrance to the Borotakia Station in Mirsharai at around 1:30 pm on Friday, according to Eastern Railway official Ansar Ali.
Two others were rushed to a local hospital with injuries, bdnews24.com reported citing Upazila Nirbahi Officer Minhazur Rahman.
The train was en route to Chattogram from Dhaka and as it was approaching the level crossing, the microbus climbed onto the track, according to Ali.
The gateman had lowered the bar at the crossing but the micrbus pushed through it, he said.
The vehicle was dragged a short distance by the train before it stopped.
A total of 14 passengers were heading to Khaiyachhara from Hathazari on the microbus, according to UNO Minhazur.
Eleven of them died on the spot, while two others were injured. One of the passengers, however, escaped from the accident unscathed.
The railway authorities have formed a five-strong committee to look into the incident.
