University students to get internet at nominal cost

The state-owned mobile operator Teletalk will provide internet bandwidth to the students of country’s public and private universities at nominal price with an aim to facilitate their virtual educational activities during coronavirus pandemic.

Students of all the 42 public and 68 private universities, who are using the Bangladesh Research and Education Network (BdREN) platform run by University Grants Commission (UGC), will be able to enjoy the facility.

Under this arrangement, the students will be able to participate in the online classes through Zoom application using Teletalk network, said a press statement of the UGC on Wednesday.

The students will have to recharge Tk 100 per month to get this facility. The amount will be deposited to the original accounts of the students, it added.

Recharged money will be spent for voice call and data usage and unused money will be adjusted with the next recharge.

However, if any student recharges less than Tk 100 or does not have minimum data in the SIM card, he/she will not get the facility, the UGC statement clarified.

BdREN earlier has sent letters to all mobile operators, including Teletalk Bangladesh Limited, on July 21 this year about ensuring online education resources for the students at free of cost.

In response to BdREN's call, Teletalk issued a consent letter on August 28.
