The female students of Rajshahi University (RU) have been suffering much for the shortage of buses.
Sources said there are some 33,000 students at the university. Of the total around 45 per cent are female students.
Most of the female students are living outside of the campus due to accommodation crisis at dormitories. They depend on the university transportation for their daily communication. But shortage of bus service is a great suffering for them.
Among all the 16 routes of the university buses, a large number of students are travelling in Saheb Bazar, New Market, and C and B routes. But each one of these routes has only a double-decker bus service.
At least 2,000 students travel on these routes per day, sources informed.
Concerned sources said university has 38 buses including 22 for male students, six for female students and four in damaged condition while six others are out of order condition.
A total of 28 buses are now covering 16 routes which is quite inadequate.
Administrator of RU transportation office Dr Md. Maynul Haque said the problem is not about bus but the shortage of drivers.
There are only 30 drivers against 57 posts. Same scenario prevails for the helpers post.
