President urges graduates to stand against terrorism

President Abdul Hamid on Tuesday urged students to stand against terrorism and militancy aiming to build a 'Sonar Bangla' envisioned by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

He also asked them to ensure that terrorism and militancy have no room in Bangladesh.

The President was addressing at the 3rd convocation of Bangladesh University of Business and Technology (BUBT) at International Convention City Basundhara in the city on Tuesday afternoon, reports UNB.

President Hamid, also the chancellor of the university, said the new graduates must contribute to building a happy and prosperous country imbued with the spirit of patriotism, firmness of character, social responsibility and professionalism.

He advised them to keep in mind that national progress is not possible without patriotism and sacrificial attitude.

"You have to come forward for the betterment of the country, which we achieved by dint of three millions martyrs," he said.

Noting that today's world has become more competitive in the 21st century at the time of an open market economy, the President asked all to enhance their expertise in using ICT apart from acquiring knowledge and efficiency aiming to reach Bangladesh to a new height globally.

He suggested for adjusting ICT with the business education to boost the country's economy.

About the private sector's investment in the country's economic activities, the President said, "Due to the investment of private entrepreneurs, new job opportunities are being created and the demand of skill manpower in business and technology is also increasing gradually."

He stressed the need for preparing university curriculum and teaching method time-befitting ones ensuring international standard.

Abdul Hamid said the country has already achieved success in various sectors, including economic growth, per capita income, agriculture, education, health, rural infrastructure, electricity, communication, information and communication technology (ICT), trade and commerce, small and medium industries, women's empowerment, youth and sports, social security, construction of multipurpose Padma Bridge, and expansion of bank-insurance and financial sector.

Professor Emeritus Dr AK Azad Chowdhury addressed the function as the convocation speaker while BUBT Trustee Board Chairman AFM Sarwar Kamal, Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Prof Abdul Mannan and BUBT Vice-Chancellor Prof Mohammad Abu Saleh, among others, spoke on the occasion.
