MBA: when, where, and if

MBAs are considered valuable. But are they really worth it?

According to the latest trends, top HR recruiters disagree about the value of an MBA compared to what general people commonly think.

Earning an MBA, or Master’s in Business Administration, can help professionals by enhancing their career opportunities by increasing compensation and maybe even a promotion. The knowledge and skillset earned through the programme is crucial for management and higher positions. Yet the value compared to cost, and the right timing and choice of schools are some of the key things to identify when making the choice.

It has almost become a trend in Bangladesh to go for an MBA immediately after earning a BBA. Yet, ask yourself this question; Is it really worth it for your career at this stage?

What the youth are failing to understand about the right timing of doing an MBA is the use of application in support of the knowledge and skillset earned through the programme, Until and unless your targeted employer requires you to have an MBA to start your position, it is quite useless to go after such a degree at the time.

Another key point about the timing of doing an MBA falls under the concern of the costs associated with it. When going for an MBA, it is crucial to ask whether earning the degree significantly improves where you will be upon completion. If the degree does not translate to higher compensation, a promotion or a better job, perhaps the timing is not right.

Doing an MBA for the sake of doing an MBA should never be the expectation of a person or of their family. The right programme and choice of school is another key factor to consider when making the choice. Simply earning a degree from an unrecognised school does not make the candidate any much better in the eyes of the top HR recruiters.

Lastly, the choice of a business programme in the first place should be in the minds of the individual. Increasingly, companies globally are valuing the knowledge and skillset of candidates from other art’s background. The diversity of the workplace is now more important than ever, and companies are diverting from the traditional mindset of hiring only business graduates.
