"Considering the suffering of the admission seeking students, this year's admission test will be in 5 units instead of 10 units," commented the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of Jahangirnagar University, Professor Md. Nurul Alam.
The remarks were made during a courtesy call and exchange of views between Vice-Chancellor Nurul Alam and members of Jahangirnagar University Press Club in the office room of the new registrar building of the university on Thursday (April 21).
During the meeting, the leaders of the JU Press Club discussed several issues including the opening of the under-construction dorms, the inauguration of in-person classes for the first-year students, the much-awaited convocation of the university and the election of all councils including JUCSU to restore the democratic environment.
Jahangirnagar University authority arranged official convocation for the students only five times in its fifty years of history. The last convocation was held in 2015.
The newly appointed Vice-Chancellor expressed optimism about organising the convocation and said, "Convocation may be held this year."
About the in-person classes of the freshmen (50th batch), the Vice-Chancellor said, “There are 6 residential halls for students under construction and construction work of two is nearing completion. Soon we will be able to open those halls and start physical classes for the first-year students.”
Regarding the construction of a new library building, he said that the work of demolishing the old library building and constructing a new library will start soon.
The departments have been suggested to keep the seminar library open till 8 pm so that there is no problem in the study of the students during the development work of the library.
The Vice-Chancellor also talked about irregularities and corruption in the university.
Promising honesty and sincerity, he said, “I will not compromise with any kind of corruption. As long as I am in charge, I will fulfil my responsibilities with honesty and sincerity.”
