DU hosts conference on genocide

The Centre for Genocide Studies of the University of Dhaka has organised a two-day long international conference on genocide and mass violence in Dhaka on Thursday.

The second edition of the programme has been organised at the university’s Senate Bhaban Auditorium in cooperation with the Ministry of Cultural Affairs.

DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr  Md Akhtaruzzaman presided over the inaugural function, while Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor MP addressed it as the chief guest.

Former Professor of Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, India Ashis Nandy delivered the keynote speech.

DU’s Director of Centre for Genocide Studies Professor Imtiaz Ahmed gave a vote of thanks.

Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor MP called upon all to work together for making Bangladesh a secular, democratic and free thinking country after equipping themselves with the spirit of our Liberation War. 

VC Professor Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman paid tribute to the memories of three million martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the Liberation War in 1971.

He also urged the international community to raise their voices against all kinds of genocide and violence including Rohingya persecution in Myanmar. He called upon the researchers to conduct comprehensive research to create public opinion around the world in this regard.

Academicians, lawyers, researchers and human rights activists from home and abroad are participating in the conference, according to the press release.
