DIU arranges seminar ‘Drug-free Beautiful Life’

Daffodil International University (DIU), in association with Department of Narcotics Control (DNC), recently organised a seminar titled ‘Drug-free Beautiful Life’ at 71 Milinayoton of the university.

Sanjoy Kumar Choudhury, additional director general of the DNC, was present at the seminar as the chief guest, says a media release.

Professor Dr. SM Mahbub Ul Haque Majumder, Pro Vice Chancellor of the DIU, was present as the guest of honour, while Hamidul Haque Khan, Treasurer of the DIU, presided over the seminar.

Professor Dr. Arup Ratan Choudhury, founder president of Association for the Prevention of Drug Abuse (MANAS) and Mr. Fazlur Rahman, deputy secretary of University Grants Commission of Bangladesh (UGC) addressed the programme.

Professor Dr. Golam Mowla Choudhury, controller of examination of the DIU, Professor Dr. Farhana Helal Mehtab, Associate Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Science, DIU, also spoke at the event.

Mr Choudhury said, “If we can’t save our young generation from the pounce of drug addiction, it will be very tough to achieve the goal of vision 2021 and vision 2041. So, at any cost we will have to prevent drug addiction from the society.”

He also said that narcotics control law has been passed recently. Government has taken zero tolerance policy against the drug abuse.

“Regularly anti-drug campaign has been conducting throughout the country to create public awareness. Department of Narcotics Control also have taken massive activities to prevent drug addiction. Today’s programme is the part of those activities,” he added.

Addressing as the special guest Professor Dr. Arup Ratan Choudhury said, drugs of amounting Tk 150 million to Tk 200 million are being sold per day only in the Dhaka city.

More than 7.50 million young people are addicted with drug throughout the country. This amount is increasing as 10 per cent per year which is very alarming.

So, we will have to be proactive to overcome this menace, he said.

He warned the students not to take drugs even as a fashion or curiosity and also warned them not to smoke as smoking is the root of all sorts of drug addiction.
