Professor Amir Hussain, Professor Nurul Alam and Professor Ajit Kumar Majumder won the three-member Vice-Chancellor panel election of Jahangirnagar University by procuring the highest votes of the senate members.
On Friday (August 12) evening, the Returning Officer of Vice-Chancellors' Panel Election and University Registrar Rahima Kaneez confirmed this information.
Achieving maximum of 48 votes, from the panel of 'Bangabandhur Adarsha Ebong Muktizudder Chetonay Bishwashi Progotishil Shikkhok Somaj' Professor Amir Hussain became the first in the election. From this panel, Professor Sufi Mostafizur Rahman, and Professor Prithila Najneen Nelema got 23 and 15 votes respectively.
Professor Nurul Alam himself from 'Vice-Chancellor Nurul Alam led Bangabandhu Shikkhak Parishad' panel became second getting 46 votes. His panel mate, Professor Ajit Kumar Majumder secured the third position with 32 votes. Another panel mate of current Vice-Chancellor, Professor Laek Sazzad Andallah got 19 votes.
From the 'Bangabandhu Shikkhak Parishad' panel, Prof. Abdullah Hel Kafi and Prof. Tapan Kumar Saha got 20 and 7 votes respectively.
The special senate session started at 4 pm. Senators nominate and support candidates there. Senator Kaykobad Hossain proposed the name of professor Amir Hussain led-panel and was supported by Mohabbat Hossain Khan.
The panel of professor Nurul Alam was proposed by Senator Farid Ahmed and seconded by Hosne Ara.
Also, Professor Khalid Quddus proposed the name of the Kafi-Tapan-Motaher Panel of 'Bangabandhu Shikkhak Parishad', supported by Professor Muhammad Hanif Ali.
However, after the in-house proposal and support of the Senate members, IBA Prof. Motaher Hossain gave verbal refusal to the senators to participate in the election and in allocated ten minutes, he withdrew the candidature in writing to the returning officer.
After a long eight years, the JU Vice-Chancellor panel election began with a total of eight contestants from three panels.
A total of 76 out of 82 senators and voters were present in the Senate session, each of whom can cast a maximum of three votes.
However, This list of elected candidates will be sent to the chancellor of the university. He will appoint any of the three members nominated by the senate as the vice-chancellor of the university for the next four years.
