Global coronavirus cases cross 205 million

The overall number of global Covid cases has now surged past 205 million, an alarming figure that paints a bleak picture of the second wave of the pandemic in several countries.

According to US-based Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the total case count mounted to 205,368,850 while the death toll from the virus reached 4,334,088 on Friday morning.

So far, 4,570,459,316 vaccine doses have been administered across the globe, reports UNB.

The US, which is the world's worst-hit country in terms of both cases and deaths, has so far logged 36,305,005 cases. Besides, 619,098 people have lost their lives in the US to date, as per the JHU data.

Brazil, which has the world's second-highest pandemic death toll after the United States, and the third-largest caseload after the United States and India, recorded 566,988 deaths and 20,285,067 cases, respectively, on Thursday.

Neighbouring India recorded a total of 32,117,052 cases, the third-highest in the world, and 430,285 deaths till Thursday morning.

Meanwhile, Indonesia has logged 42,988 Coronavirus-related deaths in the past 28 days, which is highest across the globe during this time, officials said on Friday.

The country has recorded a total of 3,774,155 cases and 113,664 deaths so far.

Situation in Bangladesh

With millions of people still waiting to receive their first dose of a coronavirus vaccine, Bangladesh reported 215 Covid-19-related deaths as health authorities came up with their 24-hour report on Thursday. 

On August 5, the country reported 264 deaths shattering its previous single-day record of 258 Covid-related deaths on July 27 and it was repeated on August 10 when the country logged 268 deaths. 

Besides, 10,126 more people came out Covid positive during the period after testing 45,078 samples, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). 

The fresh numbers pushed Bangladesh’s total fatalities to 23,613 and the total cases to 1,396,858.

The case positivity rate during the 24-hour period declined further to 22.46 per cent from Wednesday’s 23.45 per cent and Tuesday’s 23.58 per cent, while the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a 5 per cent or below rate.

The recovery rate, however, rose slightly to 90.35 per cent, with the recovery of 13,990 people during the period, said the DGHS.

But the case fatality rate remained static at 1.69 per cent during the period, according to the DGHS report.
