Turkish police on Friday detained at least 12 people, including academics, in Istanbul over their suspected links to a group believed to be behind a failed coup in 2016.
The state-run Anadolu Agency said Betul Tanbay, a mathematician at Bogazici University, and Turgut Tarhanli, a renowned law professor at Bilgi University, were among the detainees caught in simultaneous operations launched across the city, reports Xinhua.
The other detainees were members of the Anadolu Kultur, a cultural association, whose director was in custody over charges of trying to overthrow the government during the failed coup in July 2016 and attempting to abolish the constitutional order, said Anadolu.
Police are hunting eight other suspects, according to the agency.
Ankara accuses the US-based Turkish cleric Fethullah Gulen and his group of masterminding the coup attempt that left 250 people dead.
