Turkey to release US pastor Brunson

A court in Turkey is to release the jailed US pastor Andrew Brunson, whose detention for the past two years by Turkey sparked a crisis in ties with the United States.

Brunson returned to court on Friday, with US media outlets reporting a deal was struck for the North Carolina evangelical's release, reports BBC.

The American pastor was arrested over alleged links to political groups following the failed 2016 coup attempt.

He denied charges of espionage, which could have led to a 35-year jail term. He was sentenced to three years in prison but will not serve time as he has already been in jail for two years.
