An air ambulance was dispatched to treat the injured and Dutch media reported counter-terrorism officers were involved in the investigation.

According to BBC, a square near a tram station in the west of the city has been cordoned off by authorities, and emergency services are at the scene.

The shooting took place at about 10:45 local time (09:45 GMT).

The perpetrator is believed to have fled the scene and reports suggested police were hunting more than one suspect.

Police have asked people to keep roads clear for emergency workers to get through.

Reuters says, police did not give any further details about the incident and could not say how badly hurt the victims were.

“Several shots were fired in a tram and several people were injured. Helicopters are at the scene and no arrests have been made,” said police spokesman Joost Lanshage.

Local broadcaster RTV Utrecht quoted an eyewitness as saying he had seen a woman lying on the ground amid some kind of confrontation. Several men ran away from the scene, the witness said.
