The Catalan parliament’s declaration of independence on Friday has changed for the European Union (EU), said the group’s chief.
The President of the European Council Donald Tusk also stated the EU will only deal with the central government in Madrid, as per a report on Reuters.
“For EU nothing changes. Spain remains our only interlocutor,” Tusk said on Twitter.
Catalonia’s parliament declared independence from Spain in defiance of the Madrid government, which at the same time was preparing to impose direct rule over the region.
Tusk also urged Spain to favour “force of argument, not argument of force.”
