In a much-awaited development in Indian politics, the Congress Vice President will succeed his mother Sonia Gandhi to lead the oldest political party of the country.
Gandhi, 47, will take control of the country’s principal opposition party from his mother, who served as the Congress chief for a record 19 years.
"All India Congress Committee's Central Election Authority officially announces Rahul Gandhi as the President of the Indian National Congress," the party made the announcement on Monday through its official Twitter.
Rahul Gandhi had become the Congress Vice President in January 2013. The stage was set for Rahul with him filing his nomination for the post in the presence of party heavyweights at its headquarters in New Delhi on December 4.
Among them were six Chief Ministers -- Punjab's Amarinder Singh, Karnataka's Siddaramaiah, Himachal Pradesh's Virbhadra Singh, Puducherry's V. Narayanasamy, Meghalaya's Mukul Sangma and Mizoram's Lal Thanhawla
There were at least another 90 sets of nomination papers filed to support his candidature.
Apart from states and union territories, senior leaders on the Congress Working Committee (CWC), including former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, AK Antony, Ahmed Patel and Ghulam Nabi Azad are likely to submit different sets of nomination papers.
The elevation of Rahul Gandhi, who has been spearheading the Congress campaign for the Gujarat Assembly polls, has been much talked about in party circles for around two years.
